With about 40.5 million people on food stamps it's fair to say some conservatives are in that number. I'm certain that the way the United States economy is currently spiraling down the drain, and the job market shrinking daily, many people need the extra help. As Glenn Beck says there is nothing wrong with a hand up, just not a hand out.
The point of food stamps was to help with the economic burden on people and ultimately give them the resources necessary to purchase food. That may have been the initial intention, however now it has surpassed just the necessary people signing up. The program has fostered a culture of dependency. A culture where the stigma of food stamps doesn't even exist. A culture that expects the government to provide.
The new trend I believe may be even more dangerous. Lets call it "justified entitlement." As I have spoken to many conservative friends, neighbors, and family members of all races and creeds I keep hearing a familiar refrain. "Well, I have been funding these food stamp programs through my tax dollars, so I might as well take advantage too, Screw Obama." or some form of that sentence seems to be the norm. Groups of conservatives now feel that since Obama is redistributing our money to bail outs and health care they aren't going to be the "suckers". Especially the young conservatives. The young conservatives don't want to be the ones left holding the bag, or even funding it.
It seems that conservatives have become so spiteful of Obama that they are signing up for government assistance to accomplish two things.
I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Then again it's getting to the point where not much surprises me anymore.
This sort of try to get over on the government reminds of when ODB from the rap group Wu-Tang Clan took 2 of his 13 kids by limousine to a New York State welfare office to pick up his welfare check; while his album was still in the top ten of the US charts. The entire incident was filmed by MTV. That sort of absurdity I'm afraid is infecting conservatives as well. People are just sick of being taken advantage of by the government.
This is what the progressive liberals want. Certain conservatives that think they are getting over are actually feeding the beast. While they think they are feeding it poison in actuality it’s just the sustenance it’s looking for. The sustenance of Justified entitlement.
*Footnote:
USDA estimates enrollment will average 40.5 million people this fiscal year, which ends Sept 30, at a cost of up to $59 billion. For fiscal 2011, average enrollment is forecast for 43.3 million people.

- They don't feel taken advantage of by the government, as they are the ones taking advantage
- In Conservative circles it has become a bragging point. Look I'm making Obama look even worse statistically by signing up for government benifits.
