Abraham Lincoln Presidential $1 Coin Cover

The US Mint will release the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Dollar Coin Cover on December 30, 2010 at 12:00 Noon ET. This will represent the final numismatic product release of the year.

The product will follow the same format as the previous releases of the American Presidency $1 Coin Cover series. Two 2010 Abraham Lincoln Presidential Dollars from the first day of mintage at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints will be mounted on an illustrated display card. The 44-cent Flag postage stamp is canceled with the postmark "November 18, 2010, Springfield, IL" representing the official circulation release date.

The sets are priced at $15.95 each and carry a maximum production limit of 37,000. This is 5,000 units greater than the limit set for the other 2010 releases, in anticipation of higher demand for the Lincoln set.

Back when the American Presidency $1 Coin Cover series began in 2007, the production limits were set at 50,000 units and sell outs were achieved for at least the first three releases. Since that time, sales have softened, and the US Mint has dropped the product limits.

So far, the 2010 releases have sold 21,653 (Millard Fillmore), 19,808 (Franklin Pierce), and 17,908 (James Buchanan). It's almost certain that the Abraham Lincoln cover will see higher sales, but a sell out might be difficult to achieve.

Last Opportunity Products

On December 30, 2010 at 3:00 PM ET, the US Mint will conclude sales for three prior year products.

Sales will end for the 2009 District of Columbia & U.S. Territories Quarters Proof Set, which originally went on sale nearly two years ago. To date, sales have reached 635,423. The sets are available at the original price of $14.95 for the six coin set.

The presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Sets for James K. Polk and Zachary Taylor will also conclude. Each of these sets is priced at $8.95. Last reported sales for the sets are 9,889 (Polk) and 8,746 (Taylor), however the US Mint has not provided updated numbers for these products in several weeks.

James Buchanan $1 Coin Cover

Today September 30, 2010 at 12:00 Noon ET, the US Mint will release the James Buchanan Presidential Dollar Coin Cover. This will represent the fifteenth release for the American Presidency $1 Coin Cover series.

The cover incorporates two 2010 James Buchanan Presidential Dollars from the first day of mintage at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. The coins are mounted on an illustrated display card with a 44-cent postage stamp. The postmark on the cover is "August 19, 2010, Lancaster, PA", which coincides with the official circulation release date of the coins.

The covers are priced at $15.95 each plus shipping and handling. A product limit has been established at 32,000 covers.

The Presidential Dollar First Day Coin Covers have experienced a gradual decline in orders as the series moved forward. The first release featuring George Washington had sold out of the entire 50,000 maximum production. As sales have declined, the production limit was adjusted lower for subsequent issues.

Franklin Pierce Presidential Dollar Coin Cover

Today July 1, 2010 at 12:00 Noon ET, the United States Mint will release the Franklin Pierce Presidential Dollar Coin Cover. This will be the second release of the year and the fourteenth release overall for the American Presidency $1 Coin Cover series.

The cover will include two Franklin Pierce Presidential Dollars from the first day of mintage at the Philadelphia and Denver Mint facilities. These will be mounted on a display card within an illustrated envelope. The 44-cent Flag postage stamp is postmarked May 20, 2010, Hillsborough, NH, representing the circulation release date for the coins.

The Franklin Pierce Coin Covers are limited to production of 32,000 and priced at $15.95 each.

While it may partially be the impact of the slower summer months, I have been noticing that the US Mint's subsidiary-type products have been experiencing sharp sales declines.

The most recent example is for the Presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Sets. The set featuring Franklin and Jane Pierce sold only 1,340 units in the opening sales period. This compares to initial sales of 2,362 for the previous set featuring Millard and Abigail Fillmore. The second previous set featuring Zachary and Margaret Taylor had debuted with sales of 2,702.

The two most recent Presidential $1 Coin Covers had recorded initial sales of 17,833 for the Millard Fillmore cover released on April 2, 2010 and 18,705 for the Zachary Taylor cover released December 30, 2010. It will be interesting to see how much of a decline is experienced for the Franklin Pierce cover. Dropping sales are likely an indication that some US Mint customers are getting bored of the current product line up or dismayed by this year's higher pricing.

Sales Ending for D.C. & U.S. Territories First Day Coin Covers

Next week on June 30, 2010 at 5:00 PM ET, the United States Mint will conclude sales of the 2009 District of Columbia & U.S. Territory Quarters First Day Coin Covers.

All six of the covers are still available for sale currently, including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands. Each cover is priced at $14.95 each.

These products may be worth a look since they represent the last First Day Coin Covers produced for quarters for the foreseeable future. The US Mint previously confirmed that they will not be creating similar products for the new America the Beautiful Quarters Program. This final year of covers also marks an improvement in design from the somewhat bland template used for the State Quarter covers. Finally, the covers boast relatively low production runs, as compared to the Presidential Dollar and State Quarters Coin Covers.

The Presidential Dollar Coin Covers have sold as many as 50,000 units for the initial releases of the series. Current releases have shown a decline in popularity, but still top more than 20,000 units each. The earliest State Quarter Coin Covers sold 100,000 per state before descending to lower levels. I wasn't table to find any sales figures for the later years of the series, but this old Mint News Blog post has some interim sales figures for the 2007 covers, showing sales above 20,000 for each state.

The last reported sales figures for the DC & U.S. Territories covers are included below. These numbers include sales through June 20, 2010. This week's full sales report is available on Coin Update News.

The figures above should place the total sales solidly below even the lowest production State Quarter and Presidential Dollar Coin Covers. Time will tell whether these low numbers will create a new allure for these covers on the secondary market.

Recently completed eBay auction show some of the tougher to find State Quarter First Day Coin Covers selling around $30 to $40 each. About a year ago, I recall some covers selling for more than $100 each. On the low end of the spectrum, some of the high production covers sell for as little as $4 or $5 each. It bears mentioning that there seems to be somewhat of a thin market for these covers at present. Most are listed for sale with fixed Buy It Now prices and the sell through rate is low.

There may already be some measure of speculation taking place for the DC & U.S. Territory covers. Ever since the US Mint announced the impending conclusion of the offering, the pace of sales has increase to 100 or more covers per location per week. In the last week nearly 200 covers were sold for each location . Prior to the announcement, sales had been running about 30-40 per week for most issues.

Millard Fillmore Presidential Dollar Coin Cover and Other Updates

Today April 2, 2010, the US Mint released the Millard Fillmore Presidential Dollar Coin Cover. This represents the thirteenth release for the American Presidency $1 Coin Cover series.

Each cover includes 2010-P & D Millard Fillmore Dollars from the first day of production at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. The coins are mounted on a display card placed within an illustrated envelope. The envelope has a 44-cent Flag postage stamp with a special cancellation and postmark of February 18, 2010, East Aurora, NY. This was the first day the Millard Fillmore Dollar was released into circulation.

The covers are priced at $15.95 each. This represents a $1.00 increase from the price level for previous covers in the series. The US Mint has raised prices for a large number of products this year.

The maximum production for the Millard Fillmore Dollar Coin Covers has been set at 32,000. This is a 20% reduction from the limit of 40,000 used for last year's covers. The covers released during 2007 carried maximum production limits of 50,000.

US Mint Product Schedule Updates

The US Mint has provided specific release dates for a number of upcoming products. This includes the 2010 Lincoln Cent Two Roll Set, which will be released on April 8, 2010. This set had been expected at the end of March. Pricing and release details are still unknown. The comparable 2009 Lincoln Cent Two Roll Sets were priced at $8.95 each. The sets for the Professional Life and Presidency designs still remain on sale.

In the month of May, the US Mint will release the 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Set on May 13 and the Quarters Silver Proof Set on May 27. These sets will be priced at $14.95 for the regular clad set and $32.95 for the silver set.

On May 20, 2010, the Franklin Pierce Presidential Dollar Rolls will be available. This corresponds with the circulation release date for the 14th coin in the Presidential Dollar coin series.

Northern Mariana Islands Quarter Coin Cover

The US Mint will release the Northern Mariana Islands Quarter First Day Coin Cover on January 12, 2010 at 12:00 Noon ET. This will be the final coin cover in the DC & US Territories Quarters Program.

Each cover will include two 2010 Northern Mariana Islands Quarters, one each from the first day of mintage at the Philadelphia and Denver Mint facilities. The coins are mounted on a display card with a 44-cent Flag stamp. The cancellation will be November 30, 2009, Saipan CMNI, representing the first day the quarters were released into circulation.

The covers are priced at $14.95 each and will be limited to 20,000 units. The US Mint product page is already available here.

The other First Day Coin Covers issued for the DC & US Territories Quarters Program all remain available for sale on the US Mint's website. As of the most recent US Mint sales report, the District of Columbia cover sold 17,887 units, the Puerto Rico cover sold 14,747, the Guam cover sold 11,216, the America Samoa cover sold 9,553, and the US Virgin Islands cover sold 7,395.

The first three releases of the series had a maximum production limits of 25,000 units each. The maximum was reduced to 20,000 units for subsequent releases. It has not yet been confirmed whether First Day Coin Covers will be offered for the upcoming America the Beautiful Quarters.

Zachary Taylor Presidential Dollar Coin Cover

The United States Mint will release the 2009 Zachary Taylor $1 Coin Cover tomorrow December 30, 2009 at 12:00 Noon ET. This will represent the final release of the year for the American Presidency $1 Coin Cover series.

The cover will include two Zachary Taylor Presidential Dollars from the first day of production at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. The coins are mounted on an illustrated display card with a 44-cent Flag postage stamp. The postmark will be November 19, 2009, Louisville, KY to mark the circulation release date for the coins.

The covers are priced at $14.95 each with a production limit of 40,000. The US Mint product page can be found here.

Sales of the Presidential Dollar Coin Covers have shown a general decline since the first releases of 2007. That year, the US Mint sold a high of 50,000 for the George Washington cover and a low of 44,466 for the James Madison cover. For 2008, the high was 36,138 for the James Madison cover and the low was 25,476 for the Martin Van Buren cover.

All of the previously released 2009 Presidential Dollar coin covers are still available for sale at the US Mint. The last reported sales figures are 26,983 for William Henry Harrison, 23,679 for John Tyler, and 21,492 for James K. Polk.

U.S. Virgin Islands Quarter First Day Cover

On November 10, 2009 at 12:00 Noon ET, the United States Mint will release the 2009 US Virgin Islands First Day Coin Cover. This will represent the fifth release of the DC & US Territories Coin Cover series.
Each cover includes one U.S. Virgin Islands Quarter from the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. These quarters will be from the first day of production at each respective mint. The coins are mounted on a custom display card with a 44 cent United States Flag postage stamp. The postmark will be September 28, 2009, Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, IV. This represents the first day the quarters were released to the public.

The covers are priced at $14.95 with a maximum production of 20,000 units.

Previously released 2009 Coin Covers for the DC & US Territories Quarters remain available for sale at the US Mint. As of the last weekly reporting period, the US Mint has sold 16,493 District of Columbia covers, 13,084 Puerto Rico covers, 9,476 Guam covers, and 7,513 American Samoa covers.

Letitia Tyler First Spouse Bronze Medal

On a separate note, the US Mint recently sold out of the Letitia Tyler First Spouse Bronze Medal. This medal went on sale July 2, 2009, priced at $3.50. Although the individual option is no longer available, the medals will be available again starting December 3, 2009 as part of the 2009 First Spouse Five Medal Set.

American Samoa Quarter First Day Cover

Yesterday, the US Mint released the 2009 American Samoa First Day Coin Cover. This represents the fourth release for the 2009 District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters.

Each cover includes one American Samoa Quarter from Philadelphia and one from Denver that were produced on the first day of mintage. These two coins are mounted on a nicely designed display card with a 44 cent Flag stamp. The postmark is July 27, 2009 Pago Pago, AS, the day the coins were released to the public.

The maximum production for the American Samoa Covers is 20,000 units. This is actually lower than the prior releases for District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Guam, which all had a maximum of 25,000 units. To date, these releases have sold 14,454, 10,468, and 5,998 units, respectively.

The US Mint will release the Guam Quarter First Day Coin Cover on July 28, 2009 at 12:00 Noon ET. This will be the third First Day Coin Cover released for the 2009 DC & US Territories Quarters Program.

John Tyler Presidential Dollar Coin Cover

The US Mint will begin selling the John Tyler Presidential Dollar Coin Cover on Thursday, July 2, 2009 at 12:00 Noon ET. This will be the tenth release in the ongoing American Presidency $1 Coin Cover Series.

Each coin cover will feature two John Tyler Presidential Dollars, one from the Philadelphia Mint and one from the Denver Mint. Each coin was produced on the first day of mintage from each facility. The coins are mounted on a custom display card with a 44 cent stamp, post marked May 21, 2009, Charles City, VA. This day marked the official release of the coins into circulation.

Puerto Rico Quarter First Day Cover

The United States Mint will offer the Puerto Rico Official First Day Coin Cover on May 12, 2009 at 12:00 Noon ET May 26, 2009 at 12:00 Noon ET. (Release date revised by US Mint.)

This will be the second coin cover offered for the 2009 District of Columbia and US Territories Quarters Program. The first offering for the District of Columbia Coin Cover only recently went on sale on April 24, after the initial release date was delayed.

The Puerto Rico Coin Cover will feature two Puerto Rico Quarters, one each from the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. The quarters will be mounted on a custom display card with a canceled 42 cent postage stamp. The post mark will be March 30, 2009 from San Juan, PR.

The covers will be priced at $14.95 each and will be limited to 25,000 units.

A few readers commented in the post about the prior release that these First Day Covers might have the potential to be relatively quick sell outs. With the US Mint's shrinking product line, customers might consider products that they have not previously collected. Products containing the 2009 Quarters also seem to be quite popular with numerous bags and rolls products already sold out. It would not take a lot of additional demand to quickly exhaust the 25,000 production run.

The US Mint will release the District of Columbia Quarter First Day Cover on April 24, 2009 at 12:00 Noon ET. First Day Covers were also offered for the prior 50 State Quarters series. This will be the first cover release for the DC & US Territories Quarters series.

The District of Columbia First Day Cover will include two quarters, one each from the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. The quarters will be mounted on a custom display card with a 42 cent 24/7 Flags stamp. The card will be post marked January 26, 2009, Washington, D.C.

The offering will be limited to 25,000 units. The covers are priced at at $14.95 each. This is the same price changed for last year's State Quarter First Day Covers, all of which still remain available for sale on the US Mint's website.
