ARE WE SEEING AN INCREASE IN CHILDHOOD SUICIDE DUE TO BULLYING?
We have all faced incidents of bullying while growing up, and we survived it, but for some reason, it seems that each new generation of children are less and and less able to handle being bullied. WHY, WHAT EXACTLY IS GOING ON?
Is it just my imagination or is the number of children committing suicide, due to being bullied, increasing at an alarming rate?
One estimation puts the number of children being bullied at school around 50% annually, and that at least 16 to 20 of those children will commit suicide. Then the blame is placed on school authorities because they haven't intervened to stop the bullying.
When I was bullied at school, if I came home feeling sorry for myself and told my parents, I was told to "suck it up" and fight back. All of the kids of my generation were told this, because bullying was a normal part of growing up and it was the way that we learned our place in the "pecking order". We learned real quick to stand up to the bullies and we bettered our selves and our positions in society.
What happened between then and now? Today, it seems that the biggest nightmare that most parents have is discovering that their child is, or has been, the victim of bullying, and the one doing the bullying may be an obnoxious classmate or, in some cases, a teacher or someone in the neighborhood.
Bullying may be in the form of physical attacks, verbal assaults, and mental abuse. Today, we even have syber abuse on the internet. But no matter what form it takes, why is it that more and more children are ill equipped to handle being bullied?
Could the reason possibly lay in our public school system itself? Could it be that children today have been brought up to believe that they all "special" and therefore deserve the best of everything? Could it also be that due to the lack of teaching 'personal responsibility' that a lot of kids may be being bullied because of some action on their part?
Is there anyone out there who can tell me why, since the human race first appeared on earth, being bullied was a normal part of growing up and children learned to deal with it with killing themselves, until recently? Just what exactly is going on?
