DRAIN-O POP BOTTLE BOMB:
I am posting the following as a Public Service Announcement and I hope that each of you will help get the word out. This is no joke. I have seen several of these laying around the lawns and parking lots at the apartment complex where I live and had no idea what they were.
What I am speaking about is what is known as "Works" bombs. A "Works" bomb is simply Drain-O, several pieces of Aluminum foil (generally rolled into small balls) and water mixed together inside of an empty plastic soda bottle with the cap on. The chemical reaction between the Drain-O and the aluminum foil creates a volatile build up of gases which will detonate the bottle with terrific force.
Not only can a person lose fingers or hands from the explosion, but the chemical substance in the bottle at the moment of the explosion becomes a boiling liquid that can cause severe acid burns to all exposed body surfaces that it comes in contact with.
People are finding these in their yard, mailboxes, porches, etc. If you see one, DO NOT TOUCH IT!! Please warn your children to leave them alone if they spot them. If you should find one on your property, do not let your pets out. CALL 911 immediately.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR:
If you find a plastic soda, water or tea bottle, especially if it is capped and has a strange looking liquid inside, examine it carefully from a safe distance before touching it. If it looks like it has aluminum foil in it (often the foil is rolled into small balls), or if the bottle shows signs of swelling or melting, DO NOT TOUCH IT, instead, call 911. These "Works" bombs WILL explode within a matter of 30 seconds of being moved.
Parents Must also educate their children about the dangers and consequences of making these bombs. It seems to have become a popular pastime with young teens to make them. Not only can it be dangerous or deadly to those making these bombs or the innocent victims, but Federal law makes it a felony called "Possession of a Substance with Explosive Capabilities". If it causes no damage it is a felony carrying a 15 year sentence. If it causes damage, it carries a 20 year sentence, if it cause physical injury it is a 25 year sentence, serious physical injury is a sentence of 25 years to life. If it causes a death, the penalty is a mandatory sentence of life with out the possibility of parole.
