"A woman has the last word in any argument. Anything a man says after that is the beginning of a new argument."
SOME THOUGHTS ON AGING:
I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, my loving family for less gray hair or a flatter belly. As I have aged, I have become kinder to myself. I have become my own best friend. I don't chide myself for eating those extra cookies or donuts, or for not making my bed, or for buying that silly lawn ornament that I didn't really need, but looks so avante garde on my patio, because I feel that I am now entitled to a treat, to be messy, and to be extravagant.
I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon; before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging.
Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on my computer until 4 AM and sleep until noon? I will dance with myself or my dog to those wonderful tunes of the 50's, 60's & 70's, and if I, at the same time, wish to shed a tear over a lost loved one...I dang well will.
I will walk the beach in swim trunks with my knobby knees, and with my belly hanging over the waist band, and dive into the water with wanton abandon if I so choose, despite the pitying stares from the younger generations. They too will get old and stale.
I know I am sometimes forgetful. But then again, some things in life is best forgotten. After all, I do eventually remember the important things.
Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break when you have lost a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when you have lost a beloved pet through sickness or accident? But broken hearts are what gives us strength and understanding and compassion. A heart that has never been broken is pristine and sterile and will never know the joy of being imperfect.
I feel that I am truly blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning gray, to have my youthful laughs be etched forever into deep lines in my face, and to have seen my sons grow, marry and have families of their own.
I find that as you get older, it becomes easier to be positive. You begin to care less about what other people think of you. I don't question myself any more. I have even earned the right to be wrong once-in-a-while.
So yes, I like being old, it has set me free. I like the person I have become. I realize that I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste my time lamenting on what could have been, or worrying about what will be. And I shall eat dessert every single day if I feel like it. And most importantly, I shall hold my grandsons and granddaughters on my lap and give them hugs and kisses.
